TOKYO GAME SHOW 2004 under the theme A Brand New Sensation for Everyone in the World, will be held from September 24 (Fri.) through 26 (Sun.) at the Nippon Convention Center (Makuhari Messe). The show is organized by Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association <CESA>, co-organized by Nikkei Business Publications Inc. and supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry under the special sponsorship of NTT DoCoMo. The entire exhibition area covers approximately 47,000m2, including Exhibition Hall 1 through 7.

A total 117 exhibitors include game software companies, game software development tool companies, and game colleges from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the U.S., and China. The number of exhibitors exceeds the 111 at the last year’s show is the highest ever since the first Tokyo Game Show was held in 1996.

There are a total 1,491 booth units, a number second only to the 1,530 units of Tokyo Game Show in the spring of 1999. A total of 461 game software titles on exhibit have already been announced for display by the exhibitors.

In packaged games that have been rapidly improved, number of the new games in the series has being released. User-friendly games, which correspond to the user’s needs for a variety of games and ways of enjoyment, are also attracting attention. New portable platforms and expanding online games have been diversifying and improving platforms. Cross-industrial collaboration has been rapidly increasing new business and new services. Overseas companies are making rapid progress. Computer entertainment industry is now in a new phase for further development.

New portable platforms have been attracting attention worldwide since their announcement. Substantially improved performance creates functions, which are not in the current fixed platforms, on these new portable platforms. It is greatly expected to expand world of computer entertainment. At the TOKYO GAME SHOW 2004, in addition to 14 game titles on exhibit already announced, a number of unannounced titles will be on exhibit.

Mobile phone games with improved game performance will also attract attention. The third generation mobile phones and fixed-fee service for data-communication have enabled long time playing games enjoyable on the mobile phones, to say nothing of easily and quickly enjoyable games.

Mobile entertainment--game software for new and current portable platforms and mobile phones--accounts for 26% of all game titles on exhibit. New portable platforms and third generation mobile phones are poised to expand the fun of mobile entertainment and serve game fans’ needs.

In online gaming, a total of 80 titles will be on exhibit, far exceeding the 51 titles of shown at last year’s show. Companies from Korea, Taiwan, and other countries are now getting into Japanese market, and Japanese game firms have also released new online games. In Japan, the market for online games also seems to be growing.

Enthusiastic approaches to the reinvigoration of the game industry will be also made. ”TGS Developer’s Workshop” will be held for the fist time at the “Development Tools & Middleware Area” on the Business Day. New technologies for new-generation games will be introduced, and a number of seminars will also be held.

Under this year’s theme “A Brand New Sensation for Everyone in the World,” we hope to provide the world with brand new “sensations”--sensations generated by unprecedented new amusement--that transcend national borders and generations to drive forward not only the game industry but the entire world entertainment scene.
